Description

Set consisting of jacket and trousers. Shirred crew-neck jacket with long sleeves and structured hem with circular batten, front fastening with black buttons; made of butter-coloured silk covered with voile of the same colour, with thick symmetrical embroidery of pineapple motif, flowers and leaves with black thread, black beads, metal piping and transparent beads. Trousers with grosgrain strap, with zip at centre back, made of black silk velvet. Ankle boots with leather heel and covered with black silk.

The jacket is inspired by a model designed by Russian artist Léon Bakst and worn by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The baroness was portrayed by Baron de Meyer in a photograph published in Vogue America on 15 January 1913, and also depicted in the painting Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in Bakst Costume with Fleurs du Mal by Howard Gardiner Cushing (1911-12, oil on canvas).
